HOME / AAC / ABOUT THE AAC

The Athenaeum Art Center (AAC) is a vibrant and expansive art space boasting over 5,000 square feet of creativity. Our print studio is unmatched in San Diego, featuring 10 presses and over 300 cases of type, including an Asbern AD-1 proof press, Asbern Adretta-prototype proof press, 19th century Columbian and Imperial platen presses, Ettan etching presses, Griffin etching press, Vandercook tabletop proof press, Nolan tabletop proof press, and a small tabletop platen press. We offer weekly Open Print studio time to the public for printmakers of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced, thanks in part to the Prebys Foundation and Dr. Edward Petko.

Our facility features a main Catherine and Robert Palmer Gallery space and a secondary classroom gallery, both designed to inspire creativity and learning. The classroom is equipped with a kiln for ceramics and sculpture classes, and we offer a wide range of classes through the Athenaeum School of the Arts, including painting, sculpture, encaustic, printmaking, and bookbinding. We also host weekly life drawing sessions with life models as a drop-in class, providing a unique opportunity for artists of all levels.

Located inside the Bread & Salt Building, our gallery is open Tuesday–Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours on the second Saturday of every month for the Barrio Art Crawl, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to our regular programming, we host special events, and our space is available to rent for your events. Throughout the year, we host pop-up exhibitions in collaboration with community organizations, as well as concerts, lectures, and various other activities. Our bilingual staff is dedicated to making the Athenaeum Art Center accessible and welcoming to all. Stay connected by following us on social media, becoming a member, and joining our email list for the latest updates and information.
